Fairtrade in Schools

Horsham Schools and Fairtrade

Fairtrade comes into the National Curriculum in several areas and so most schools are familiar with Fairtrade.

Fairtrade Horsham is encouraging schools to work towards these standards and would be happy to talk to any school who would like to achieve this certification.

POSTER COMPETITION
520 young artists entered the competition to create posters depicting the Fairtrade message and celebration of Horsham’s 5th anniversary as a Fairtrade town.

The prize was at the YMCA on July 10th during the Horsham Fairtrade 5 year celebration tea and cake party from 3pm to 5pm.

In summary, the remit for the posters was:
"Many children around the world are deprived of their childhoods and have to work because they live in extreme poverty with poor food, no health care and no chance to go to school because of the effect of unfair trade rules on their family.  By buying Fairtrade goods we can vastly increase the family income and break this cycle of despair for children.  The growth in Fairtrade has meant that more can be helped and this growth has been attributed to the local campaigning around the country of the Fairtrade towns"

The four first-place winners will have their designs printed and used around the town in July 2010 to celebrate Horsham’s 5th Fairtrade Town anniversary.  £25 Prizes are offered for these four first-place winners.  It is also hoped to display as many of the entry posters as possible in Central Horsham during July 2010.  The winners will also receive a prize and all entrants will receive a bar of Fairtrade chocolate.  There will be a panel of 3 judges including a member of staff from the County Times.  The County Times will be publicising the outcome of the competition.  There are four different age categories in the competition for 5-7 year olds, 7- 11 year olds, 12 - 14 year olds and 15 - 19 year olds.
The closing date for entries was at the end of the Easter term April 1st 2010.
